XFree86 giving me some really hard time

Right. I thought I would just upgrade for fun from XFree86-4.2.1-3mdk to XFree86-4.2.1-11mdk.
Because of dependency issues I download the file freetype2-2.1.3-2mdk.src.rpm and an RPM called fontconfig-something.rpm, compile it and then install it.
So I download the file XFree86-4.2.1-11mdk.src.rpm, compile it for i686 and install the new RPM:s the usual way.

Now, this is giving me a really hard time - X runs alright, however the fonts don't work AT ALL.

I've disabled my Nvidia driver and changed my resolution to 640x480 just to be sure it wasn't anything simple like that. But the problem is I couldn't find anything suspicious in the xfree86 log created in /var/log/.

Anyone who could pleeease give me a hint on how to fix this? Gees I wish I knew XFree86 better than I do... =)

Tell me if I should dump my XF11Config-4 file or the log file in /var/log/.

Sheers,

Also XFree86 comes with a version of freetype that's not as good as the one you downloaded (yet).
