X windows cursor/pointer problem

Somehow I've managed to hose up my pointer and I'm finding precious little documentation on this, so if anyone knows how to fix this it would be appreciated.

The problem is that my mouse pointer has four states and one of them has to go away.

The first is the familiar "I beam" shape.
The second is the arrow.
The third is a hand with an extended finger (a polite one).
The last (dag nabbit!) is a pesky speckly mostly white field that shows up at the edge of any open window.

This is driving me nuts, particularly since I did it to myself.

If you can "point" me in the right direction on this I would be mightily obliged.

Thanks in advance,

Bill

Look in ~/.icons/default and ~/.icons/default/cursors

You may have messed something up in here.
