X problem (GLX? ... ?)

[Log in to get rid of this advertisement]
All windowed apps (all browsers, net beans, kate, konq ... ) have a very strange behavior-

without any user action the windows will rescroll to a different position (sporatically, sometimes very frequently) and the mouse will jump to another spot.

All openGL screen savers and apps seem to work well, however, the OGL screen savers will stop by themselves, eventually, as if a gui input was recieved.

I'm not using Beryl, although it does work.

It seems like a bug in a repainting method somewhere
...but where?
perhaps a hardware issue?

Any clues?
It's very irratating.

distro: Mepis 6.5
kernel: Linux 2.6.15-27-desktop
video card: nvidia geforce 6200 v+ 256 ddr2 (diablotek)agp
Xorg -version: X Window System Version 7.1.1
Build Operating System: Linux 2.6.15-27-desktop-smp i686
CPU : celeron 3.2MHz
mobo : biostar

Ive asked this a few places and searched til my eyeballs turned red. No help.

sounds like the programs are not buggy, just receiving bad input from somewhere. If you want to test if its the video drivers, switch over to the vesa drivers, no hardware acceleration, but if the problem still exists, then its probably not a driver issue.

What DE are you using? See what happens if you use a different one.

X problem

I'm using kde 3.5.3

Mepis uses gtk2, which crippled xmms (it plays but it's resize will crash, etc), and I think fluxbox and ?perhaps nvidia driver?. fluxbox desktop opens, but the menus don't. I'll try a few other DE's in the mean time. (downloading now)

I'm pretty certain that a non-3-d driver wouldn't bug out, but then I wouldn't have decent 3-d (which I do have, but with buggy controls jumping around on me)

a 'pure' ogl app like planet penguin racer doesn't seem to misbehave. maybe because it's in exclusive mode or I just don't play it enough.

I had this same problem. My mouse wasn't plugged in all of the way, so it would dance around the screen every now and then, clicking randomly. This also happend to me with an optical mouse that died.

X problem

Perhaps it's solved.

As SciYro suggested, I tried another WM, FLWM in this case (I've used it before but I'm too addicted to the KDE services and features). I didn't notice any huge mouse jumps in the apps that bothered me the most, flwm, being as simple and light weight as it is might have a minimizing effect.

As soon as I read StagateSteve's post, I pushed the mouse plug in - a little tighter, but not the problem ... then I realized, I also have a wireless mouse of an ultra economy brand ($10). duh.

Thanks to all who helped.
