X login for KDE needs user+pass twice!

ok, this is a minor problem in slac 9.1

after boot I come to the graphical login. I use KDE as
default, type in user name and password, and starts initializing. When KDE reaches
"initializing peripherals", the screen goes momentarily blank and I 'm taken back to the login screen. I retype user name and password and KDE is running fine
with no (initialization) delay.
Interestingly enough:
1) I have been running fine for some time WITHOUT this error message
2) if I choose gnome instead, no such problems appear

All in all a very minor inconvenience, but I am curious why I get this.
here is the /var/log/messages. Could it be the UMSDOS error message?

Thanks, svar
