X/KDE 3.2 sometimes hangs at startup

Sometimes when I boot my mandrake 10.0 system into KDE 3.2 (default) just before the KDE splash screen normally appears the system seems to be stuck and refuses to continue. There's just the blue screen with a cross instead of the mouse pointer. After rebooting (changing to tty1, init 6) the problem resolves. The cross still appears but after say 5 seconds it changes into a clock. Then the splash screen and finally my desktop with the usual mouse pointer appear.

Can anybody tell me what could be the cause for this?
