X freezes when changing screens (pressing CTRL+ALT+*1-7)

Hi all,

I have a strange problem that occurs on a machine where I work. Using Red Hat 7.3, XFree86-4.2.0-8, along with gnome or kde. After logging in graphically anytime you press CTRL+ALT+1 - 7, the machine freezing. Logging in remotely shows that the machine is still up but the console (at least the X display) is frozen.

Anybody ever hear of this, or have any ideas as to what it could be? This machine is a pretty standard example of Red Hat 7.3, without much if any custom modifications.

X hotkeys

I know that <ctl>-<alt>-F<1-7> (the function keys) switch
virtual consoles...

<ctl>-<alt>-<bksp> kills the X server. You could try that.

I can't remember in what doc I read that last key sequence,
and the function keys I just picked up from some posting somewhere.
I'd like to know where all this funkey keyboard stuff is documented.
