X freezes, dmesg shows "CPU pipe A FIFO underrun"

Hi,
I was using my laptop today, and all of a sudden the program I was using locked up. I went to switch to a different desktop, and my window manager was also non-responsive. I was able to CTRL+ALT+F2 to a console and kill X. I noticed that on the console were these messages (that also showed up in dmesg):
Code:
[79923.419627] [drm:intel_set_cpu_fifo_underrun_reporting [i915]] *ERROR* uncleared fifo underrun on pipe A
[79923.419634] [drm:intel_cpu_fifo_underrun_irq_handler [i915]] *ERROR* CPU pipe A FIFO underrun
This has happened a handful of times in the past, and each time I am able to CTRL+ALT+F2 to a console, log in, kill X, and restart X. I haven't found any pattern to it; it seems to happen randomly.

I'm running Arch Linux on a Dell Inspiron 15R laptop.

Any ideas? I'm not too concerned about the freezing itself (though it would be nice if it could be completely fixed), I'm more worried if there's an underlying hardware issue.

What CPU and graphics card you have got?

Also which kernel, xorg video driver and server, mesa3D, libdrm versions you are using?

My laptop has been rebooted since the last time that it happened, so I don't have any logs from that. But here's my Xorg.log from a run without the issue:

My ThinkPad X240 has the same graphics chip and I see the same messages in my dmesg output. It doesn't always cause X to seize for me, but definitely coincides frequently with hangs and glitches I have working with multiple displays (something that Windows handles with ease on the same hardware).

I am running kubuntu rather than Arch, with plasma 5.3 and a vanilla 4.0.4 kernel, xorg-1.17.1, xserver-xorg-video-intel-2.99.917, mesa-10.5.2, libdrm-2.4.60.

I've read a few reports of fixes in BIOS updates, but that was not the case for my machine. Worth checking out, though.

It looks like this message mainly appears for me when (re)starting X.

I had a very similar issue occur with me when using gentoo. The error far as I can tell is not related to the freezing issue. I fixed this by disabling systemd-backlight@device.service for both the keyboard and the backlight. I would get freezing when I attempted to use any of the brightness keys on the keyboard. So far as I can tell this is a systemd bug.
