Wrong Processor Speed in Slackware 9.1

Hi there,
I running Slackware 9.1 Kernel 2.4.22 on the following Laptop:
Compaq Armada M700
Intel PIII 650Mhz
192RAM
40Gig HD

When I boot Linux it says that my CPU speed is only 497Mhz. See bellow:

Detected 497.569 MHz processor.

How can I fix it? Any help is appreciated...
Thanks!

Fernando

have u checked in the bios? have u checked the front side mhz speed

ie a modern board is an athlon/duron compatible board the duron runs at 200mhz and the athlon runs at 266mhz the correct speed must be set in the bios for those particular chips ....hence an athlon running at 200mhz would not be clocking its full potential speed, which it would be 266mhz its correct speed.

the bios settings are ok. When I boot the system using knoppix linux it does recognize the real 650Mhz. But with Slackware it doesn't. Any other idea?

can u upgrade the kernel to 2.6 ( would think this may be the best option)? or try booting straight into X or console to see directly what ur cpu speed is.

u can try
cat /proc/sys/cpu/0/speed-max > /proc/sys/cpu/0/speed (to increase maximum frequency)

but would go with upgrading first :-)

I'll try the upgrade and let you know...
Thanks!
