write permissions for a storage drive

Hi all
Ive added a storage hard drive to my Redhat Linux.
My problem is I can only write to this hard drive as root,
I want to be able to use this drive as temp stuff and mp3s
I believe the settings I need to change are in /etc/fstab, my entry for this drive is;
/dev/hdf1 /mnt/hdf1 vfat defaults 2 1
Is it the 'defaults' bit I need to change?

yeah, have a read of the mount man page, it will tell you what options are available for vfat.

you will replace "defaults" with something like "async,rw,auto,users,gid=share,umask=027" but dont just use that without having a bit of a read up on it first

vfat user,users,umask=0 0 0 that line should do.

BTW on options see man mount and fstab for additional help
user - only the user that mounts the filesytem can unmount
users - any user can unmount the filesystem.

Thanks for everyones help.
Ive got what Edward78 suggested;
users,umask=0
Files copy across (and delete) to this drive now as user but once copied I get;
Could not change permissions for
/mnt/hdf1/filename
It seems something is still not quite right
Ive tried;
user,users,umask=0
users,umask=0
user,umask=0
users,rw,umask=0
Is more tweaking needed or is this due to the fact that FAT32 support is still alpha ?

Try umask=000. Iv'e read posts where it worked when umask=0 didn't.

Post the permissions of the directory.

Tried umask=000 with the same results ;(
The permissions are odd imho
The storage hard drive has read permissions for user,group,others
and write permissions for user, ownership; user.
yet any files on that drive have all the permissions ticked
but are greyed out and ownership is root?

Thats what you want isn't it?

if you want to change the user and/or group then you can add "uid=me" or "gid=users" to the mount params if you like.

The permissions are greyed out becasuse they cannot be changed as you have set them in the mount options using umask.
