Would like to set a timer on internet usage

Hi, stuck here in China for a while. To access the Internet at this college, you have to buy a card. 50 yuan for 50 hours.

I get onto the Net when I come back to my flat for a while, and then get off again. It's hard to follow exactly how much time I spend surfing the Net.

I'd like to set a timer on my Internet usage, so I know when it's nearly time to buy a new one. I've often heard of cron job and anacron, but don't really know how they work or what they are.

I'm sure Linux has something to do what I want. Any tips out there??
