wireless media server on linux for home networking

I have an unused 466 Mhz. locally assembled desktop with fedora linux running on it, lying in the corner unused. I want to convert it to a wireless media server for home use. can anybody give an idea ? i do not want to run any wires from it except the power supply. I want to be able to upload music and stream it all over the house wirelessly. I prefer using ubuntu since now i am more familiar with ubuntu and i regularly use ubuntu

A Linux solution for this problem ...

I am new to the world of Linux -- started using Fedora myself for a home server about 3 months ago.

After struggling with a similar problem (setting up Samba to share files across different machines) I discovered an open source offering that does alot of the heavy lifting to configure Fedora as a home server.

It helped me so much that I now volunteer some time helping out with www.amahi.org

I think this will help you out.

I think a big part of the issue is going to be what kind of media do you want to serve. Audio will probably be fine over wireless, but video even over 802.11g or 802.11n might have issues.

I am a music lover and interested in audio mainly. sometimes I get video concerts from friends. such things I can download to my laptop and use it wherever i am in the house. Also please let me know if there is any gadget that i can hook on from this set to my music player so that I can play the music over my music player wirelessly or even a gadget for my speaker to use it as a wireless speaker. Thamk you

I've been using icecast to stream audio around my house from a small server. You do need to feed an icecast server with the audio files to play, but the ices program does that fairly nicely. Once it is up and running I can tune into it with Amarok or any other media player that can take a feed.
