Windows doesnt appear in boot menu..?

[Log in to get rid of this advertisement]
I installed linux last nite. It works fine and is great. But when i boot my machine up, it gives the option which OS to boot, as i have two hdd in my machine, one windows [xp] and one linux [red hat], it gives me the choice which hdd/OS to boot, but the only one there is linux.
All i know is its not recognising my windows boot file, and i need to boot it up again 2nite.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Ice

Are you using GRUB or LILO? I'm assuming that Windows is on the slave HD.

Add this to /boot/grub/menu.lst for GRUB:

title Windows
rootnoverify(hd1,0)
chainloader +1

OR

Add this to /etc/lilo.conf for LILO:

other=/dev/discs/disc1/part1
label=Windows

Windows is on the master drive.
A friend said i was to put the boot file on the master drive as thats the drive it would search for the boot first. So i did, and now when i boot up the only OS there is linux

I think the boot has overwritten windows boot file or its just not recognising it

similar to LinuXP's post:

if you're running lilo, make sure the following two lines appear:

other=/dev/hda1
label="WindowsXP"

where hda1 is the first IDE drive and the first partition on it.

It sounds like you've become confused using two disks, and lilo has written to one, but not the other, or the wrong thing to one of them.

If you boot on a second disk, maybe that changes the allocation of drive to the hda hdb letters?

check out:

man lilo

lilo -M /dev/hda mbr
