Whydoes my PINE email over the web but my sendmail doesen't?

Whydoes my PINE email over the web but my sendmail doesen't?
I need some advice please. I can email over the web using PINE. If I try to email using send mail it gets sent to my dead.letter file. Why can I use one and not the other. I am wanting to use sendmail because I am in need of emailing files automatically in a script kicked off by cron.
