Hi,

I think more information is still needed. For example:
Who is "we"? What type of "development"?

probably this is not the answer what you are waiting for, but I think it is simply not true: for example we use solaris for developement and windows.

What kind of job were you interviewing for?

Do you use Linux? (Many questions can be answered better if you are already a user.)

Are you a programmer? If so, what languages?

Wait. The interviewer ask you to tell him why he mainly uses Linux for development? What an awful, unanswerable question.

A plausible reason might be that their product's deployment platform is Linux. This is the case for, e.g., many web development firms.

Or was he asking why you prefer Linux? We can't help you with that either because, of course, your answers are yours.

Some of my reasons include:
  • window managers that I find more efficient to use (notably Xmonad)
  • a vastly more powerful command-line/shell scripting language (and I couldn't get into Powershell).
  • availability of vim plugins that don't work well or are difficult to set up on Windows
  • much better support for symlinking
  • lower monetary cost

I am actually a embedded system engineer (fresher) in a company. Well i tried to convince the interviewer at my best saying that Linux is a free source and so many of them depend on it 2day. Even more use to contribute for each others problems and many of the codes developed are shared globally with 'some edits' and hence the conservation of time...

well finally i was ended up with a helpless smile

Not a question with an answer. There may be reasons a particular programmer or company may focus only on one platform for development, but unless you are aware of their reasoning the question cannot be answered.
