I use to be a Linux guy. Loved it. Always shouted the evils of MS to everyone. Then Win2k came out. It's sexy simple style had me at hello. So I've become addicted to Win2k and XP, hell I even use Internet Explorer cause Firefox is kinda clunky. But with all the screenshots of Vista looking all MACified I thought I'd install some Linux on a couple systems and give it a go.
From the command line Linux is now and will always be insanely awesome but GUI is just ASSS. Why is this? I would think out of all the open source programmers out there then there might be at least one open source QA (Quality Assurance) person that would go through and get on their nerves a tough about usability issues. I'm not a QA person but I have had a few getting all up in my shit quite a few times.
To see what I'm talking about download the Fedora 6 DVD and hand it, a PC and a DVD with MP3s, Pictures, AVI and some other misc files to a buddy that is pretty decent with Windows. Have them install it and get it to the point that all the files will open. Trick is unplug the network cable and say "newp no internets for you"

Do the same with Windows and see how far they get even getting a decent working PC - when I installed Vista a few months ago, I was screwed because it didn't recognise my network card so couldn't get online to download the driver for the card. . . Only dual-boot saved me!
You *have* read "Linux is not Windows", haven't you. . ?
Then perhaps you could post a clearly-stated question......
Some of your other posts make sense, but this......
My other questions have probably made more sense because they are a little more serious.
I started this thread because all the others I found where way to detailed. If you look at the details then Linux is the only way to go. I wanted to see a thread focused on what Linux needs to become a real desktop solution for regular ol 12oclock flasher consumers. Mac fits the bill to a point that it becomes so annoying that I can't stand to even touch a Mac. Linux I like because it is kind of like riding a Harley, All kinds of power at your fingertips but if you don't know how to work on it you are pretty well screwed. I think that Windows really balances out the idiot factor with the power user.
Of the 3 you mention, many will argue that Linux is the best OS. But Joe/Jill six-pack does not buy the best----he/she buys the best marketed
Perhaps your question is how can Linux best be marketed.......
Not another one of these. Please contribute to the existing megathread in General, I'm too lazy to merge this one with that one. Feel free to sue me if you don't like me closing this thread for obvious reasons!
