Why does my Computer HANG?

Hi group,

my computer (ACER acerpower 12) has developed an anoying little problem; it just hangs. It started about a week ago, twice daily, now it hangs about once every two days. I have been using the computer for ca. 2 years without problems.
2 weeks ago i upgradet the Hardware:
I added an additional 512 MB RAM totaling 1 GB of RAM
I removed the CDROM drive and added 3 additional 80 GB Seagate Harddisks which i use for a RAID5 that provides a smb share for my windows clients.

After the first Hang of my Computer I started reading and monitoring the log messages carefully, but even now, I do not see anything differnet, than before the upgrade, or anything indicating the problem.
Would it help if I posted /var/log/* files?

Pls help!

The only thing that springs to mind from your description is that the memory may be causing this.
Try taking out the new memory and running for a couple of days, see what happens. Some motherboards are very fussy about memory being installed as matched pairs and which slots are used for each DIMM. Also the clock speed of the memory may not be the same or, may be too high or too low for the processor, make sure that the memory clock, latency settings, etc are right for your RAM.
If this doesn't solve it, it could be a faulty HD but that would likely cause a lasting problem which would be evident after the next boot.
Or it could be software related. In that case the dmesg output immediately after the crash may help. But I suspect it is a hardware issue given that things were fine before the upgrade
