why do i get grub error 21?

ok, when I use the disk i choose usb and I get a menu.

Code:

ubuntu 8.04.1, kernel 2.6.24-19-generic
ubuntu 8.04.1, kernel 2.6.24-19-generic(recovery mode)
ubuntu 8.0431, memtest86+
other operating systems:
microsoft windows xp home edition

when i trie one of these is get

error 17: cannot mount selected partition

what does this mean?

Please reread post #8, because I all ready warned you that would happen when you boot the Ubuntu drive; you still need to tweak the Grub menu.lst before you can boot any of the Ubuntu entries. If you follow the directions from post #8, that should work to boot you into Ubuntu, and once you are in Ubuntu, you can make the changes permanent.
