Why do fonts display so bad in Linux??
 

Hi all. I just switched from WinXP to RH 7.3 Linux on my development workstation and I must say that although I like the Linux environment very much, the fonts look terrible compared with Windows and I am not sure I understand why. Is there a reason for this? FWIW, I have a good monitor (19" MGC) and video card (GeForrce 2 MX-400 64M ) so I don't think it is a "horsepower" issue.

BTW..How do you set the display resolution in KDE?

font or resolution?

font is how text is show. To change it, play in your kde control panel/fonts.

if you are talking about resolution (800x600, 1024x768...), you have to edit your XF86config that should be located in your home dir. open this file with a text editor and edit the lign about your resolution. Your box should be able of 1280x1024 without problem (I have the same graphic card than you and this is my resolution). If you don't like text editing, you can also run xconfigurator (or xf86config? I think it's xconfigurator under Redhat. not sure about this) to start a script that will create a new Xf86 config file.

Also, you should think about installing the new NVidia Drivers. Their drivers are awesome and are able of far better performance than X generic driver.

Thanks. I am talking about the fonts - as in text. They looks terrible, fuzzy and broken. Not sharp and clean like I would expect.

Frankencat, I had the same questions. RH fonts bite! what you will need to do is copy true type fonts from a good source, I used a office 97 MS publisher CD I had. Office 97 has some fonts I use that were discontinued after 97. Just open the kde control center go to system and use the font installer, That will make a huge difference.

OK, I just installed some fonts from a Windows2k machine and things look better after some tweaking. Thanks for the tip!
