why can't i install mandrake?


why can't i install mandrake 8.1. when i run the cd-rom after restarting my pc, i press enter like it says, and then my cd-rom light goes off and i get a error saying error cant' decompress phase 2. and something no directories. do i need to partition my disk using fips? please help

You could try if booting with bootfloppies will work. On the cdrom there should be a dos directory with an explanation on how to get the boot image(s) onto floppies and boot to install.
But make sure youve got enough memory for the installer to decompress its ramdisk in, else try the expert text-based installer (if they got it) instead of the graphical one.

Partitioning will be done during the install, and Im sure the install docs mention you need some free space to install Linux in, or how to create free space with fips.

i dunno how, but i got the error like usual but this time it went thru the setup, so took advantage of it. and now i am on linux. but one bad thing is, i have to get the info for my dsl to work on linux now. i need the host/username/password. i am on verizon.
