Whole GUI Can't View Images

I use FC5 with Gnome.
I was trying to install the program dvd::rip with yum and it said that it had a conflict with a package that involved the word 'stream' somehow...I don't remember the exact name. So with yum I removed it. The darn thing still didn't work.
I also installed the recent version of the Democracy video player (that also didn't work).
An hour or so later I went to view a picture file with gthumb and while the image of the file appeared as the icon, I just couldn't get it to view the file. So I ended up viewing it with GIMP which worked.

So thinking it it was a fluke, I restarted the computer. Now the only place that views any images at all is Firefox. Ack!!! The Gnome background, icons, all image viewers except GIMP don't view any images. But while loading GIMP says that the image type (whatever type it is) is not supported. So my desktop is very grey with those grey icons and such.

I checked to see if the whole gstreamer set of packages was installed and they are.

BTW, I checked and the sound is fine.

So obviously I either need a missing file or there is a file conflict in the system. Does anyone know the needed files to view any image files, so I can check to make sure I have them?

Also any ideas for what I should do at all would be a great help.

Hey, at least I have the web.

update

Here's what I have tried so far. I've checked the log files and nothing comes up as suspisious. I also checked the yum log file, which gave me that 'stream' file. It was 'streamdvd-streamanalyze'. So with yum I reinstalled it. No effect. What I am thinking now is that there is a file that is conflicting with images that was installed as a dependancy.

Any thoughts? One idea would to issue the following command:

less suspect_list.txt | yum remove

I'm afraid to do it as it could hurt my system even more. Anyone have any advice?

SOLVED!!
In my terminal window it was throwing up errors that it couldn't find gtk2 files it needed to resolve images when it was loading a file. Since a gtk2 update was done in the list above, I typed 'rpm -q gtk2' and found two versions. I removed the recent one and now it works great.

Thank you all, despite the fact that I didn't need you. Maybe this will help someone else someday. Just now calming down.
