which linux to use for celeron 300

Dear all,
I have a celeron 300 mhz pc with a 2 gig. hdisk. I intend to put in a linux system and present it to a primary school kid. I don't know which system would fit into this small hd and a celeron system. It has a small problem of cmos checksum error too. Any ideas and advice would be very much appreciated. tq.

Yeah - trash the computer.

Well OK. I guess you could try restoring the CMOS to its defaults and see if that gets rid of the checksum. But you have to take care of this as it means your BIOS is corrupted.

2gig disk - consider puppy linux.
You could probably get a cut-down version of debian on there.
Zenwalk may fit...

Edubuntu fits inside 2gig???
I guess... however, I suspect the main issue will be RAM. Ubuntu varients can be pretty slow, what with gnome an' all ... how about Xubuntu?

Even xubuntu would be too slow I guess. How much RAM does the machine have?

I really don't think you will manage to get that machine to be attractive to a schoolkid. You might be able to get it running, but not in a way that a youngster would use it.

Believe me, I used a similar system for the last months. I had 64 MB of RAM and I didn't use xfce because it was way too slow. I ran a really really stripped down Slackware and the only window managers I found usable played in the fluxbox/icewm league. I didn't use a graphical login though to save memory and didn't even have KDE/Gnome installed.

A seven-year-old would't like being presented to a black screen with blinking cursor too much, I guess

At a minimum, Deli Linux, maybe Damn Small Linux or Austrumi, perhaps even Vector Linux.
Take care of your CMOS problem first.
