that depends on yourself... if you life inside of the "steve-jobs-reality-distortion-field" then of course an 20Mega Hz Mac from the early 90ties runs faster than "earth simulator".... if you life inside reality, then an 800$ pc runs linux better than an 800$ mac .
an 10.000$ mac might run linux nearly as fast as an 1000$ pc... but a mac comes in a shiny beautyfull case.
Two comments - first, it seems to me that the only people who can properly evaluate this question are those who have used *both* Macs and PC's extensively, and who also have run an identical series of benchmark tests on both. Without either of those controls in place, a survey asking "which is faster" would be prone to being biased by speculation or rumor. Has this been covered by a lab that specializes in side-by-side comparisons? Their findings may be useful in this sort of research. Just my 2 cents. -- J.W.
any1 else just... sigh when they hear "But G5 is the most powerfull processor"
i have a friend who queted that advert once...
and they allways have this kinda spaced out look when i reply with
"have you not noticed how that advert was banned by the advertising standards people"
I've used a PPC and an A64FX with linux on them, and to tell you the truth, most things were pretty much compareable. In the end, somethings ran better on one over the other, and vice versa.
In my experience Linux runs equally well on the Apple PPC computers and Intel-compatible PC's. I had a Wallstreet Powerbook once and it was a great machine but too heavy to carry around, the same of which can be said of most high performance PC laptops. It ran Linux very well. I didn't do any benchmarks - I'm not interested in them. If the computer appears to run fast and smooth to me, then I'm happy. I don't have to outshine the other kids on the block with my bogoMIPS count.
sorry all of u , i think i poked my nose where it doesnt belong, please dont consider my previous post abt linux running better on mac, i'm really sorry. From now on , i'll doublecheck facts, rumours b4 posting
maxium pc ran a bench mark against the p4 extrem edition the amd 86-64 fx and a doule mac g5 the verdict, the amd was the fastest followed by the p4 that mac which cost at least 2 grand more exept in video processing were the mac did better, all systems used the best hardware the vender would put in so they were all 9800 and ddr ram. this was done in a win enviroment
Interesting that the mac trails the P4 because AMD and the g5 are both 64-bit, whereas the P4 is 32-bit. A more accurate test would be to use the Itanium (64-bit), but one could argue against it for the reason that the Itanium isn't available to the average Joe.
