Which do you like better and why? KDE or GNOME

I have had this debate with a few of my fellow students. Which is the prefered desktop enviroment. Some say KDE( like me) Some say Gnome( mostly the instructors, wonder why that is) I want to know what this particular *nux community tinks!

priller 04-20-2006 03:02 PM

I prefer kde but I dont use either.

reddazz 04-20-2006 04:21 PM

There have been plenty of discussions about this. Take a look at this thread.

lin_user2004 05-01-2006 09:39 AM

I voted for KDE only cos it has more apps. Or else I don't care much which DE or WM I am using. No I am still not a geek enough to manage with CLI and I do need my daily dose of graphics and multimedia.

GreenBandit 05-01-2006 11:09 AM

I voted for KDE. I installed Ubuntu on one PC & Kubuntu on another. I kept using Kubuntu and I have now given up on Gnome. KDE seems more like the GUI that I "grew up with", namely RISC-OS3. The really sad thing though is that I still mainly use Windows (sorry about the swearing) as with 5 PCs all running BOINC software, it was just too much hassle under Linux, be it Kubuntu, Ubuntu, DSL or Mandriva. Also I am seem to get 10% more BOINC cobblestones under Win2k than under Kubuntu. I'll try the Linux route again later in the year.

SpecHackers 05-01-2006 11:18 AM

I donot like any environments of linux, kde or gnome. I am windows, mamamammmmmmmmm

ioerror 05-01-2006 11:22 AM

Neither, they are both bloated TAT and far too slow for acceptable use (opening a konsole on my 2GHz Athlon takes almost 1 second -- pfff, what's it doing, recompiling it?).

jdwilder 05-01-2006 11:24 AM

I started out using KDE at my old school, and when I installed my first distro Gnome was the default, and my first impression was that the look and feel was less rigid and had softer edges, which I liked. Nowdays I do not have anything against KDE (except I hear it includes some proprietary software), but I have just stuck with Gnome because I am more familiar with it.

KDE does not contain any proprietary software and its components are licensed under various opensource licences.

ingvildr 05-01-2006 04:28 PM

i choose xfce ;)

keithmcd 05-01-2006 10:19 PM

I've got both installed but use Gnome. If I want to run a KDE app, then I do it in Gnome. For me, it's a difference between 282mb ram when idle (KDE) and 98mb ram in Gnome. Tough choice.

Wynd 05-01-2006 10:56 PM

I like KDE because it's easy to install and use. I'm on Slackware so getting GNOME, whether from source or from a third-party project, is a pain. Plus I like the look of Qt apps better.

Is that supposed to be a joke? You really consider it to be acceptable to lose ~100mb just to run your window manager? !!! Man, M$ has a lot to answer for...

beebelo 05-02-2006 09:43 AM

This is like asking "which is better--Ford or Chevy?" No one can ever win this argument... I like Gnome better than KDE because:

* KDE has way too many apps. There are multiple ways to configure the same desktop options. Too cluttered--it drives me crazy.

* KDE tries too hard to be like Windows, and I hate that.

* On my Gnome desktop I use drawers, and to my knowlege there is no such thing in KDE.

* Gnome is perkier than KDE on my AMD Sempron 2800+ with 1GB ram.

* Gnome is everything I need without a lot of junk.

I prefer KDE because for me it just works better; the last time I tired both managers I ran into more problems with Gnome on my system. However, I think that the appearance of the Gnome interface is more professional and polished, while KDE looks more like a toy. On my older system I just use a console, or if I must have X I use Fluxbox. It's amazing how fast that runs on an old PII....

samuelmp 05-02-2006 11:19 AM

Like KDE best there are more apps and more people seem to use it and looks beter, gnome looks old to me [out of date even though they do new relices]. If it weren't for that ubuntu introducing new users to gnome then there will be more KDE users this is only because they are the only distro giving away free CD's and lots of them with free postage, I have had two baches of them I have a big bag of them, they where sent to me 2 days ago, I have 10 386 cds and 5 64-bit, which are now going in the bin. o and I hate ubuntu. I mean what about there so called kubuntu which does not even come with Firefox or amarok I mean who would make a distro with out theses

o and buy the way it seems that gnome has won the battle of the standard desktop which is why the ubuntu cd's are going in the bin. yep have a look hear KDE users

http://www.linuxboxadmin.com/articles/gnomewon.php

if KDE goes them I am going back to windows

unknown_mosquito 05-02-2006 02:39 PM

Gnome is the perfect window manager.
It is not too lightweight-- I can slim it down to just have the functionality I expect when I am running a gui, but KDE is bloated and ugly. Why does KDE have a "Redmond" theme? If I wanted my computer to look like 'doze, I would run 'doze.

I have tried "lightweight" managers like fluxbox, but they are so lightweight you can't get anything done because it's all hidden away somewhere.

Not to mention the simple beauty in a Gnome desktop; nothing flashy, just utilitarian, smooth, and useable.

Gnome beats out KDE hands down every time.

IceChant 05-02-2006 09:22 PM

I use KDE maybe it reminded me Windows at start when I first tried it but it's just that for me I got used to it, I tried Xfce too it was nice but came back to KDE.

mark_alfred 05-02-2006 11:26 PM

I find KDE a bit too cluttered for my liking. The layout of Gnome is more straight-forward. It took me a while to adjust to having the menu button in the top left corner, though (as opposed to the Windows/KDE standard of the lower left corner.) Now that I'm used to the top left corner, however, I find the Windows/KDE set up kinda strange.

Re 16: Kubuntu is Debian based, meaning it comes with the ability to install practically anything. If you want Firefox, just open KPackage, or Synaptic, or Adept (or whatever program Kubuntu has to install packages) and search for Firefox and install it. Or, in the terminal (aka "konsole") enter "sudo apt-get install mozilla-firefox". Good luck.

snowtigger 05-04-2006 08:08 AM

I vote for the CLI, which i use for admin and config work. But for a GUI i use WindowMaker with Rox. Its small and quick with none of the clutter of gnome or kde

:)

jlliagre 05-04-2006 10:12 AM

This poll is missing the "None of the above" choice ...

By the way, I use icewm.

I second that. I've tried KDE about five times (in every couple of years) and I've never kept it in my HDD longer than 24 hours. Now they have Modular KDE but I've found my favorite - XFCE. I've tried GNOME-Light too and it still was to bloated for me.

vivek reddy 05-04-2006 11:29 AM

i like KDE, but to tell you the truth i have not used gnome till date.

vivek

Eternal_Newbie 05-04-2006 01:28 PM

XFCE is my desktop of choice, but I prefer KDE to Gnome.

knoxautoguy 05-14-2006 05:48 PM

I've only tried Ubuntu (with a little delving into cli) and I find it to be far better than Windoze of any flavor. The learning curve of any Linux distro is daunting for a MS drone but well worth the effort.

sleekmason 05-14-2006 06:41 PM

Windows maker with the kde kicker . . . . would'nt have anything else now. If its a question of space then black box or the like, if your computer is fast enough, Then kde seems to have the better gui.

PB0711 05-14-2006 07:40 PM

I'm a Suse man so guess what, KDE I've played with Gnome but it bugs me with the whole mouse over the selected window thing. I use alt-tab to go between vi(m) (or Kate depending on my mood) window and the terminal while programming.
Anyway if your a real linux/Unix person it's neither. Good old terminal window, need to download something ... it's wget :) lol
But I'm no where near that... :p

Linux.tar.gz 05-15-2006 07:01 PM

Gnome is too hard to compile, and too intrusive when you do it.

Lordandmaker 05-16-2006 11:47 AM

KDE.

Though i like the idea of Fluxbox, it's taking aaaages to become intutive-feeling...

craigevil 05-16-2006 12:46 PM

Had to choose KDE, but I run IceWM on my Debian laptop system.

I do use KDE on my desktop system running PCLinuxOS and KDE 3.5.2

Electro 05-16-2006 12:59 PM

I like XFce4. It is a lot lighter and faster than Gnome and KDE. Gnome and KDE are too bloated.

I use both CLI and KDE. What I like about KDE that the number of apt's are more intituative, working better together (best part), and works well with the CLI. I've been using GNOME and often grit my teeth for ill conceved interface (grab a lot of text, move to another apt'ion and then find out both paste and cntl v doe not work between them). I don't care if it looks like MS Win's or SUN, it works well!
