Which distribution do you recommend for a new Linux user?

I would like to try a new type of operating system and am wondering which distribution would be good for a new user who just wants to use the pc for writing reports, spreadsheets and web browsing.

I'd go with ubuntu I've recently switched to linux myself and am loving it. it was a doddle to install and every for me at least worked out of the box as it were. zenwalk is quite user friendly both come with programs you'd need by the sounds of things
