Which desktop do you use?

Hi guys

I just installed my LFS system and want to put a X Desktop on it, but i,m unsure as to which one.

I dont want one thats slow and bloated but its gotta have a good filemanger like konqueror, what do you recommend? I was thinking of either enlightenment or window maker.

Thx guys

i use windowmaker now... it's very nice!

but i'm not sure it has a default file manager on it... i don't think there is one!!! (or at least i can't find it)

i supposed u could run konq or nautilus on windowmaker. but nautilus is bloat-ware and runs too slowly... konq seems a lot better. why don't u try running konq in wmaker? i'm sure it'll work...

and um... i think enlightenment is bloat? (not sure but i tried it quite some time back and it was helluva slow...)

personal experience here... perhaps u can wait for more experienced ppl like finegan, Aussie, trickykid etc...(pardon me for leaving out any names that deserve mention here... i'm tired from the christmas shopping) they're very helpful and give very interesting insight to these things.

me? i just ramble...

Thx for the reply

I,m just gonna go for window maker I think, I can allways install another anyway, but I got a question, --enable-kde --enable-gnome , should I do this just to run some of its apps, even if i,ll never install kde or gnome?

Thx again

you'll have nothgin to loose by doing that, but it'll add a bunch more code into the system, so it's up to you. remember that even tho gnome is based around gtk, a gtk app isn't a gnome app. same goes for kde/qt. you'll probably want to install qt or gtk to get various programs you like to work, but that's not a half way to installing one of them.

Hi

I also use windowmaker (version 0.64)
, that is mostly,
konqueror just runs fine in it.

Its fast and smooth and good controllable, by
editing some configfiles.

The only thing i happen to notice, it
leaves
the system sometimes stuck in X; not responding
to keyboard nor mouse only a hard reset works
Think its got something to do whith the Nvidia drivers
i'm using. All my other systems just work great
on same distro and windowmaker.
According to some magazine XFce is also a nice
option for an X desktop

I'm using KDE right now, and I love it. I've also seen FVWM and AfterStep. There are so many choices available that it's amazing... especially after being locked into the one standard Windows GUI for so long. And you can't beat having a real command line underneath it all either.

I use KDE, mainly because I think it has a prettier interface than GNOME. But both are good desktops.

I switch around sometimes but these day I mostly use kde because of the features it has. I switch desktops sometimes but I like RISC-OS style and window decoration either RISC-OS or laptop.

If speed was an issue I would use windowmaker.

i actually use xfce for my desktop.. small and fast, not too clunky to me either. not much support for it though, so it can be a bit harder to get going for newbies i would say. i tend to use gnome by default though with distros before downloading any other desktop.

I use KDE because I like the features it has, I also use a lot of Gnome apps, basicly you can use anything you like as long as you install the deps that it requires, for Gnome apps this means GTK and assorted libs and for KDE you need QT plus assorted libs. Running configure will let you know if something is missing, and most apps have a list of deps.

I have WindowMaker up and running and I think it's pretty darn nice. I really like the menus and I find it VERY quick too. Hmm, I think I'll take a look at FVWM2 as well - it seems to be a very "light" window manager.

I guess this is what being a newbie is all about... and heck, I can fit a few more lines in my .xinitrc.
