Unhappy Where is Samba?

I got this RedHat Linux 7.2 disks (2 CD's) and when I browsed the 2nd CD to look for the Samba RPM, I cant locate it. I tried running it in the root directory (assuming that it was intalled when I place RedHat on my System) but i got the "command not found".

I was planning to install the Samba on my system because I want to link it up on our network, but all of my friends are using Win98SE and I thought that Samba would solve this problem for my...

Could you help my out in this

Sincerely;
Ian Ace

well "samba" isn't a program in itself, it is a package. are you expecting a big pretty window to appear just by typing in the word samba? it's not going to happen. read the howto at http://tldp.org and go from there, and samba is definitely on your distro cd's if you've not got it installed already. try...

rpm -qa | grep samba

to see whats installed. on a full install on redhat you should have samba-common, samba-server and samba-clients i think.

heh... Cool isn't a word i'd use with it. personally i can think of more like "useless" "windows ripoff" (erm.. ok that's two) and others... but i guess applications like that do make a change to linux a bit easier f you're used to windows. it's really not of any proper use i think unless you have a lot of different windows machines...

Talking

When using Samba don't forget to open up a port normally 901 and then run a browser such as mozilla and point it to the local box such as 127.0.0.1:901 That way you can use SWAT which makes using Samba so much easier if you're used to windblows hehehe
