Where does the GUI boot up on SUSE?

Maybe a better question, at what point, and in what file - does the system know when to boot the gnome GUI for Suse 10.1 ?

It starts in /etc/inittab---there is a line that defines the default runlevel---presumably 5.

At least in SUSE 10.2, the scripts that get run for runlevel 5 are linked in /etc/init.d/rc5.d. To see where the scripts actually are, you can do ls -l in this directory.
