Where do the files you install go?

I've finally figured out how to install programs, and now that they are installed I can't help but wonder- where do they go (which folder and subdirectory), and how do I use access (use) them? I am using Mandrake 9.1. By the way, I plan on using some of this info as a base for a Newbie Guide to Mandrake, so thanks for helping me with that as well.

To use the program, you could either drop into a console and type the program name (eg, evolution), or create an icon/menu item.

Try looking in /usr/local - sorry to be so vague, I'm not in Linux at the moment.

All programs that installed from the Linux Cdrom (mandrake in this case) are located at /usr/bin and system programs like shutdown goto /sbin others goto /usr/sbin
