Where do packages go?

Something that helps to keep linux at arms' length from even hearty users is the abyss into which packages seem to fall.

I type: aptitude install samba

it says:

blah
blah/foo/fum
fum/foo/.
./fum/fum/sfoo

then it says

user@machine~$

And? where is it? what do I do now? This is the kind of thing that makes linux newbs particularly whiny. So where did samba go, and where do I find the next package?

On Debian based systems, you can install apt-file. Then type apt-file list samba and it should tell you all the directories.

Other typical ways are to use the which and locate commands.

When I type which or locate followed by smbmount I get nothing. I'll have to try your other suggestion.

As root, apt-file update. Then as a regular user, do apt-file search smbmount. Near the bottom I see
