where are all the basics in RH9?

ok finnaly got RH9 to take after a 3rd try, but some of the basics dont seem to be accessable.

ie:

when i type init6 to reboot from the cmd line i get file or directory not found, yet if i do a whereis it is in the correct dir.

same thing happens with top and tracertoute commands.

even if i su - and cd to the correct dir i still get that error.

is there something screwy with RH9 not allowing me to use those commands in a councel?

yes useing GNome GUI

with redhat unless you you login as root (not advisable) you have to cd to the directory a and ./command in order for it to work. It is rather peculiar. As I am not a regular RH user I can't say why this is the way it is, but I know you CAN execute those commands if you su and execute from the directory in question. Maybe some regular RH users can explain why this is so...

well if i swap screen away from GUI i could access top, but still could not access traceroute even from the proper dir.

/usr/sbin

i did this:

[xxx@localhost ray]$ cd /usr/sbin
[xxx@localhost sbin]$ traceroute www.google.com
bash: traceroute: command not found
[xxx@localhost sbin]$

id post the ls, but that is a tad long. when i do a ls traceroute and traceroute6 both show up in red revese so what ever that means.

if i su -, then i have full access it would seem. is this normal, or am i just bonkers?

[xxx@localhost ray]$ cd /usr/sbin
[xxx@localhost sbin]$ traceroute www.google.com
bash: traceroute: command not found
[xxx@localhost sbin]$

in that example if you did

[xxx@localhost sbin]$ ./traceroute www.google.com

it should work. quirks quirks all around. Don't ask me I use debian.
