When Did You Start Using Linux?

When you start using Linux, and why?

Please keep your posts down to a few sentences.

MensaWater 03-07-2017 09:24 AM

Did you see this thread already started with a similar question? Most folks are responding "when" as well as "why".

And in that thread most answers are 500+ words long and are useless as a "poll."

True enough but if the OP really wants a "poll" why not create one as LQ allows and thereby obviate the wordy answers?

szboardstretcher 03-07-2017 10:14 AM

Might be the LQ polls only allow '1' answer per poll yes? Most people have a multiple choice list of reasons they use linux or opensource. One answer isn't going to work for most people.

Do i choose free or open? Or do I like 'community supported' better?

Exactly! That’s why I requested a post limit of a paragraph.

Despite the word "poll" often being used nowadays in the narrower sense of "presenting people with multiple choices", it has long been used simply to mean the soliciting of people's opinions. Which is what the other thread is doing, with great success so far.

Maybe in 1993 ish? A dos version of linux command line. MKStoolkit free in book how to learn linux.

Because I spent too much downloading BSD over landlines from Berkley.

2008. I was just starting college and my brother in law gave me a laptop with Ubuntu loaded. Never looked back.

hazel 03-08-2017 01:14 AM

2004 or thereabouts. I can't remember the exact date.

jsbjsb001 03-08-2017 02:22 AM

2005 or 2006 one of the two.

Hi,

I have been using Slackware Gnu/Linux since 1993 when Patrick V. released the first version. Never looked at another Gnu/Linux as my main OS. I do use some diagnostic based Gnu/Linux but most of the time I use Slackware64. Now that Eric has released a Live Slackware I use it to boot other systems.

As to limiting my reply length, past the OP request. Sorry!

Hope this helps.
Have fun & enjoy!

~1996 because I was a UNIX admin and could use Caldera Linux connecting to the UNIX servers but needed MS Windows 3.11 with MS Office and other tools. Caldera came with WABI so I was able to run Windows under Linux to run those tools.

1999 - just because I could.

It was either 1995 or 1996, when I bought a copy of Slackware from Walnut Creek CDROM. I've tried several other distributions over the years and a couple of BSDs, but have always gone back to Slackware.
