Whats good monitoring Software
 

Hey,

I'm looking for some monitoring software for PCLinuxos distro, and i want to know whats mostly used, things along the lines of monit and mon.

Also i've tried to install monit on PCLinux and couldn't get it to even install so if anyone has any tips on that part also appreciated?

Depends on what you exactly want to monitor. There's more powerful ones like Zenoss, Nagios and openNMS as monitoring solutions.

Hey there, thanks for the reply i've looked at those you sugested briefly and they could be a bit to much. All i have is my own redundant server system, and i want some better monitoring to take place. So monitoring servies like apache databases email normal stuff, with as little extra overheads to the server as possible. Of course i'm well aware there will be extra overheads and it will make a difference to how much i set the monitor to run.

I've used Nagios for the last few years and love it. It also has a great support community. It take a little configuring, but once you're done it will run solid as a rock. It has client software called Net Saint and can check anything you need in Windows. For Unix systems there are even more options...

Something else I might suggest to you is cacti for graphing things you want to keep an eye on. It's a very nice package and does all the work of setting up rrd charts.

thanks for the reply as two of you have given the same name nagios, then i shall look into that a little deeper. For now however no replies needed on the monit problems its now working fine.

As stated above depends on what you are after.
Linux doesn't have any good metrics for raw performance monitoring and tuning.
sysstat is as good as I've seen in that realm, but is limited by the lack of hard data.
