What that 'rc' stands for?

I know there is a /etc/rc.d directory, that contains system startup scripts. There is bashrc where is the bash startup.. and there is a bitchxrc, which executes commands at BitchX startup.. so all of the 'rc' files are linked to some kind of startup. What does the acronym RC (if it is) means? (I doubt it means "Resistor-Capacitor circuit" )
