What is this mysterious 5th partition all about?

In Ubuntu, open up a terminal and type the following:

sudo blkid | sort

For each hard disk you have, do you see that is has a mysterious 5th partition whose file system is listed as "swap"?

What's this all about?

I currently have two hard disks hooked up to my PC, so there's sda5 and sdb5 but I'd love to know what they actually are and what they're used for...

You would not normally have swap on more than one partition. Regardless, for a complete picture, run "sudo fdisk -l" (ell, not one), and post the results here.
