what is the best linux OS to use for....

hiyas, just a general question...

I need a linux flavour that is secure... and simple resource wise...

i need to run a CS server and an email server and webserver in one.... and i have 4 domains to run email/web... with some php/sql

i've tried running the mandrake versions but they seem kinda bulky... i was thinking slackware or debian...

i have a dual 533mhz celeron on an abit motherboard with 768mb of ram...

anyone have any thoughts which would be their best/favorite?

thx

This is discussed all the time. A quick search in the distro section should result in many threads.

your situation is extremely typical. you can customize and distro to suit your needs, and any of the most common distributions is MORE than adequate for what you are after.

search for the many polls that have been polaced to see which is a more popular distro. I myself placed one too..and got scremed at, hehehe. But oh well, .

you should try Yellow Dog Linux

why?, cuz I've never tried it...so when you try it, you can tell me if it's any good, HEHEH,

Like I said, this has been discussed many times before.

So are you looking for people's favorites or what poeple think are "suited for my situation" ??

But like acid said as he answered from your first reply, any distro could and would work for you particular needs. If your wanting go opposite on each reply of what your asking to know just what other members favorite distros are, then I suggest you can surely find one of the many polls we have that ask and discuss this and I can go ahead and close this one, as we don't need another favorite distro thread.

I'm not trying to be rude or anything, I just feel why should be have a million threads scattered all over the same site discussing the same thing when you can easily add to the existing one's with your input.

fair enough. people just tend to get tired of repeating themselves ad nauseum. when you have a tangible and specific question eevryone will be more than pleased to help you if possible, but this is not such a question.

acid and tricky answered your question rather clearly. You just need to actually read well their post to see that the answer is right there.

just go to http://www.distrowatch.com/ and browse the many distros available, and see what matches your tastes/needs. Asking which distro is best in a forum like this will just give you a million different answers and won't help you at all.

well that's the whole point, repetition, if you trry using the search facilities here, you'l see that distrowatch has been recommended countless times already.

Okay, with that your asking for a specific distro you think others might think will best suit your needs from your first post. Rght ? So acid then replied with an excellent answer to that response of yours.

Then you turn your whole thread around asking what you think everyone's favorite distros are. Right ? So then I responded stating we already have dozens of threads like this, a search would find many threads with this topic, no point in making another thread when we have existing one's out there already.

Did you even try to search ? It appears not. You seem outta line but if you think our responses were non-helpful, try some other sites out there. I've browsed many and none will give you helpful, insightful and failry quick responses like you'll receive here.
