Welcome to LQ.

The kernel is Linux.
The other 95? % of the OS is not really Linux, but GNU, etc.

The "Linux" search tool : http://www.google.com/linux

If you're a student, then chances are you've got books and other study guides, which tell you this. Look in them. Otherwise, look on Google (as was suggested), ask your teacher or a classmate, if you don't understand any of those sources.

Read this article:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linux_kernel

For the future, google (despite its being evil) is a really handy search tool.
