what is it mean by shell acount?

hi,

i do know that the shell is the important part which interact with the kernel, it is like interperating ahat we command (if i am not mistaken).

but i did not exactly understand what it is means with shell account or shell login. is there any other way to login to linux system and to use it without the shell?
why it is called shell account? and shell login? is there any alternative for shell?

standard shells are bash, csh, sh, ksh, tsch, zsh and a billion trillion others. so a shell account is basically just a login, an entry in /etc/passwd etc... i guess it's jsut referred to as a shell account as you can all sorts of different accounts / logins on a system, so a user account is a bit ambiguous. calling ita shell account, seeing as the account does log into a shell, clarifies it a bit more. sure you can then do whatever you want, but at the base of it it as a single bash shell....

shell accounts are normally used to refer to accounts on server boxes, rather than desktop machines. You can login, run servers, store files and run text-mode programs but they normally are not used for GUI apps. Many ISPs will rent you these.

google
shell account isp

of indirect interest - if you less /etc/passwd
only those users with /bin/bash (typically) are login accounts
