what happens during hardware initialization?

Hi,
During linux boot sequence, all the hardware components are detected and initialized **before** the init kicks in. I would like to know:
- How exactly the various hardware in the system are detected? I don't think modprobe does it. Something else does it. In Red Hat, Kudzu does it and in Madriva, Dicover tool does it.
- What exactly "Initialization" mean? For example, when the boot process detects a mouse, what does it do to "initialize" it?

If anyone out there can help me clarify things or point me to a good link, I would appreciate.

Thanks,
Sri.
