What exactly is a kernel patch?

I know this may sound stupid but what exactly is a kernel patch?

I am using 2.6.3-4mdk kernel now. Can i download lets say a patch 2 version 2.6.5 and apply it so my kernel is upgraded 2 version 2.6.5 without the need of recompiling my kernel?

1) A kernel patch is a diff-file that contains modifications
that denote the differences between two kernel-releases.

2) Not likely.... first of all, Mdk doesn't use the stock-kernel,
they make mods to it which can cause the patch to break
the source. Secondly, you'd need a patch from 2.6.3 to
2.6.4 before applying 2.6.5. And as the patch is a source-
thing you certainly wouldn't be able to go without a recompile.

Cheers,
Tink
