What does i386 mean?

When choosing an Linux Distro ISO, I see you have option like:

i386
PPC
Sparc
AMD64

What is i386?

Isn't that short for the old 80386?

What disto works with P4 or new AMD processors?

i386 is Intel chips.........Pentium and above, I believe.

I have Slackware and LFS on a P4 1.5 ghz box.......works great

i386 is shorthand for Intel 80386 (and above). If it will run on a 80386, it will run on a Pentium, etc. ;)

Some distros also have a i586 version for Pentiums and above, only. :)

non-A64 AMD chips=i386

iirc, i386 in most contexts is another way of saying IA-32, the instruction set for the i386 archictecture. any post-80386 pentium or AMD chip will be i386 compatible.

IA-32 ? What does that mean?

intel architecture 32 (bit)
