What does CVS means?

I'll be a newbie forever so just forgive me if any stupi questions.

I would like to know what CVS means. I have downloaded some apps and their documentation talk about CVS access, etc, for their installation and execution . but they never explain what that exactly means.

PLease explain me a bit at least of what it is!
