What distro is best for apache
I want to run your basic Apache web server and i have been hearing RH9 is a bit bloated
What would be the Ideal Distro to run just your basic apache web server? |
Any of them will work and perform the same functionality as well. If you use a distro that loads other programs or services that you don't want, remove them and customize your distro.

I agree, you can make just about any distro light-weight if you know how.
I have used Mandrake and Redhat for apache and both have been great. Something like Gentoo is great for building a system towards one thing as well, I guess you should use what you feel most comfortable with... |
Any Distro will run Apache just fine. If you are looking for low-bloat and speed, i recommend Gentoo or LFS. I usually call Gentoo LFS for dummies (not calling Gentoo users Dummies because i am one, but like the book series "for Dummies).
With gentoo, you get the base system which can vary based on your USE variable (something you setup) and whatever else you install afterwards via the easy-to-use portage system. But as stated before, you can make any Distro low-bloat by not choosing the "Install Everything" option and hand-picking what you need. Like, a web server doesnt need anything X related. |
you can try out freebsd also very stable and great as a server

Sweet thanks for all the recommendations
I think ill go with what i use on my PC RH9 Its only for learning purposes if/when i put up a real server im thinking Freebsd will be my route |
this post may be a little old, but i still want to put in my 2 cents.
I think slackware would be a good choice for 4 reasons. 1) verry customizable during install, you can either avoid or enbrace "bloat", it's all up to you. 2) swaret helps keep the system up to date and its free (unlike redhats stupid service). 3) it forces you to learn to be a good admnistrator, cause if your not nothing will work. 4) I LOVE slackwares package management system, easy to use and powerfull, and with checkinstall (see sig) its unbeatable in my book. |
