What are these thing in the kernel?

Hey guys, real simple question here - when compiling a kernel (in silent mode, code hidden) the descriptions of what is being compiled are going by. The format is such:

CC (or some other two character code) [M] (If module) description

So, what are the different two-character codes at the beginning of that? Some are CC, LD...

Actually, the lines are the steps executed by make.
CC ist a variable containing your c-compiler (normally gcc), LD contains the linker-programm (usually ld) and so on.
