Smile What are the Linux basics for QA and testing

Hello,

I have never used Linux before and I would like to take classes so that I am able to add this to my QA background. All of my experience has been with MS.

What should I learn about Linux and what classes should I take for a beginner? I have seen classes for CompTIA. Would this be a good foundation to start with?

Hi, welcome to LQ!

To attend classes is good, for you will imbibe 'theories' therefrom. But I should remind you the truth that Gnu/Linux is both: Theory and Applied. This means that you have to learn also from the inside else what you learn from the outside is only carried by the breeze of oblivion.

The fastest way to learn linux is to get a machine, install linux in it, and practice what you read from here (download it) and this also.

Hope that helps.

By the way, worth telling is this: MOST Gnu/linux users don't attend linux classes. They just jumped into the swimming pool in order to learn how to swim.

Goodluck.

CompTIA shouldn't hurt that much but maybe you go the lpi way. http://www.lpi.org/
There you'll find what certified linux administrators should know about the system. Also not that much into Desktopsystem you sure find stuff that is intresting and good to know. Or just use it as a checklist to see what you already know or want/need to know.
They also have a wiki: http://wiki.lpi.org/wiki/Main_Page
