What Are archive.zip files?

I'm still experiencing failure installing and running Open.Office.
I have unzipped and untarred In my home directory are 537 files in O.O's folder labeled archive.zip

1. If they no longer have .gz as a file extension, then what are they? Do I have to unzip them again? Could I run gunzip -f as root?

2. I am looking for the executable file for O.O. I have run locatedbs and findsomeapp and found an O.O. file that ends like this: install/setup.ins Is this executable? What does .ins mean?

well i'm thoroughly confused. i'm looking at my untarred Oo installer directory and don't see anything called archive.zip. but anyway, since you say you see a file called install.ins, then i'll assume you untarred the tarball correctly. file you want to install Oo though isn't the setup.ins but an executable called "install". navigate to the untarred directory, su into root, and use the command "./install" (no quotes). that will install the main parts of Oo in the default directory of /usr/local/OpenOfficeXXXX. then type exit to get out of root and cd to that installation directory. type the command "./setup" and that will launch the installer for installing the the components necessary for your user to run Oo. that's the way sun installs star office which Oo adopted. it's used mainly as a way of installing the core components in a single place over a network in which the user on the network can then install the components necessary to run the program from a single place.
