Weird Grub Problem

Hi, I've got the following problem with GRUB. I install the operating system fine, then, when I come to install GRUB from the GRUB prompt, I try:

root(hd0, 0) - the installation is on the first partition of the first disk.

I get error 11 - unrecognised device string. The Grub manual suggests this is either a syntax error, or that the partition is not recognised by grub. However, I've tried this with FAT and ext2 file systems, both with the same effect.

However, when I do:

find /boot/grub/stage1, it correctly reports it as (hd0, 0)

Also, when I do:

geometry (hd0), it correctly detects the partition and partition types ?

Does anyone have any idea whats going on ??? I'd really appreciate any help, because I've been stuck for several days now,

Many thanks,

Duncan Feveyear

Hello and welcome to LQ!
since you haven't posted what distro you are using, I really can't help you much more than giving you this link: http://www.gnu.org/software/grub/manual/grub.html

can you flesh out exactly what is your situation?

Try
Code:
root (hd0,0)
Like the other commands you tried, it's a command with paramaters, not a function call i.e. it needs the blank after the command name. Grub can be a bit narky about parameter separation too - not an issue here, but keep it in mind for later.

Thanks for your responses. I hesitate to mention this, but it's not actually a Linux distro - but I couldn't find any other really active forums with Grub content. It started out with an operating system called Syllable, which has a special version of Grub that supports its AFS file system.

At first, I thought it was a problem with Syllable, so I switched to a 'stand-alone' copy of Grub, and tried to install it on the boot sector of an AFS / FAT / EXT2 drive. No luck in each case, although I can just about install it on the MBR.

I was using the space between 'root' and '(hd0, 0)' - it's just my lazy typing on this forum

Any other suggestions ?

thanks,

Duncan
