web server ports

hey guys, i've got a problem that i'm sure some of you have ran into...

i'm using a cable server which blocks port 80, making it impossible to host a webserver unless i send the users to a different port (ex: http://www.mydomain.com:81). that gets real annoying, so i was wondering if anyone knew of a way around this. i've seen domains where you type the domain name, and then it forwards to port 81 or 82 (type "http://www.domain.com" and the browser forwards to "http://www.domain.com:81").

does anyone know how to do this?

in httpd.conf there should be a line that specifies what port apache listens to, default is 80 change that to what you want it to listen on.

/etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf (RedHat)

I cant remeber if thats the correct location, I havnt had to mess with mine in a long time.

Oops, sorry didnt read your post correctlly when i posted.

That may be a DNS registry entery thing.

Talking Re:

Try www.no-ip.com

It's free and they offer a nice daemon that updates your ip to your dns.

Easy to setup and use.

thanx for the suggestions, guys. :-)

although, i don't think any of those will work. see, i need something that will auto forward my domain to port 81 for HTTP protocol. my cable provider completely blocks port 80, so no one can connect to my machine through that port.

i had previously used a service which sent all domain requests to my IP, which works fine for ssh, telnet, ftp, etc. but it returns a "cannot find server" when attempting to connect via http.

i know it can be done, but i'm yet to figure out how.

Lightbulb Re:

Actually, www.no-ip.com does exactly what you're talking about. My DSL provider blocks port 80 as well so I set up my Apache server to run on 8000. My normal domain is http://mithrilhall.no-ip.com:8000 but that is really annoying and people don't want to type it nevermind remember it. Using www.no-ip.com I get to use http://mithrilhall.redirectme.net

Download their software and install it and it constantly updates their server with your current IP. This way if your IP changes people will still be able to get to your website. This service offers free port forwarding!
