Want to build my own NAS box
So here I am wanting to build my own NAS box, nothing big, nothing complicated. Just want to attach 1 IDE drive to it and that's it, no fancy scsi, raid, or redundancy of any type.
Anyone here build such a unit? What O/S flavor did you use? I am mostly familiar with Fedora so I would like to use it. What programs to I need to make it work? Is there a stand-alone build of Linux dedicated to NAS, kinda like there are for Firewall/Routers? Would like my NAS box to have a web interface as well, that's why I ask. Don't mind building it all myself but would like to know at least where to start. A lot to accomplish for a Linux noob. |
Basically all you need to do is decide what network filesystem you would like to use. NFS and Samba are the two big ones. I think sshfs is fun to play around with, too.
Distribution really doesn't matter. People normally make an /opt partition and put all their sharable stuff under that. If you want a web interface to configure the file sharing, I think webmin would be a good choice. Hope that helps! |
It's a start!
