Wake on Lan doesn't work after Linux shutdown
 
Hello everyone.

I'm getting some trouble with Wake on Lan.

The main question is: when I shutdown a PC through Windows, the WOL works well, but it doesn't happen when I shutdwon the same PC through Linux.

It happens in all of my PCs here in the company.

Does anybody know what could be happening?

Since you haven't provided enough information then I suggest that you look at 'How to Ask Questions the Smart Way' so in the future your queries provide information that will aid us in diagnosis of the problem.



Do you have identical equipment? What about error logs? Same GNU/Linux on all equipment?

It is not going to acpi S5 for some reason or you have some issue as to what is shutdown is in linux. Does the lan lights go off in linux? See also S6/G3 powered off.

The NIC lights go off both in Linux and Windows. And the Switch light stays on in both cases too.

In wich ACPI state the halt command put the machine? And what about the poweroff and shutdown commands?

I had a problem a while ago with one of the models of PC we use where I work. The networks cards supported wake-on-lan but they didn't get left in the desired state.

Log on to one of the machines as root and run

Code:
$ ethtool -s eth0 wol g
Then tell the machine to shutdown and then hit it with a WOL packet and see if it wakes up. If that solves your problem then put that ethtool command somewhere it will get run automatically such as /etc/init.d/halt.local

Maybe onebuck you should read that document yourself. Please notice that in only a few replies the correct answer was given. That means enough information was given in the post to answer the question. All of the things you suggested that should be posted was unneeded to answer the question. Maybe being a good moderator is more then just slapping people around. Why don't you wait and see if someone gives a good answer, meaning they know more about the problem then you do, before you pounce on a user with unneeded comments that just increase the noise level and reduce the capacity to answer the question.

Since you seem to have a problem with my style of interaction then report it. You have not provided anything constructive to the thread. Just being judgmental.

I have read the link. I provided the link to provide the means for future & present problems. You have read it?

Glad to hear that the member has gotten some aid from other members. Which you did not provide other than to take me to task for wanting to provide the OP with potential help with the problem.

By no way was my post slapping anyone around. Your thought and misinterpretation.

Why do you think that I jumped in. I have as much right to interact or participate with members here at LQ as everyone else has. I trouble shoot & diagnose differently as most other members have their style.

There is nothing in the above that is attacking nor belittling as you suggested. Proper suggestion for inquiring or suggestions for typical information. Your style seems to be to jump & judge which is not constructive to this thread.

If you wish to continue this discussion then I suggest that you contact me via PM. As you have caused more harm by hijacking and injecting your personal interpretation of my post to the thread. Not really helping anyone within the thread! In the future, if you find someones post to be errant or violation of the LQ rules then report it. Instead of trying to be the judge & jury.
