why have i to wait on login???


hi,
i have a little but annoying problem:

when i start an ssh connction with my linux and i insert my username i have to wait until 30 seconds to receive password prompt...

do you know why???

Dns?

Have you tried checking forward and reverse DNS lookups for the machine you are using with the ssh client from the machine you are ssh-ing to? IOW - sshd typically does DNS lookups when you try to connect, that may be taking a while and slowing things down.

i've not checked dns but i didn't think it was the problem
in fact username prompt is fast...but there are 30 sec between this and password prompt...

in any case i check dns now...

have you noticed anything interesting w.r.t. the pause when you do ssh -vvv? Maybe you could try watching the logfile (via tail) while trying to log in - something interesting may show up.
